A smaller light jig for perch

Thanks to Norolan, LED jigs have already proven their effectiveness in ice fishing for rainbow trout and Arctic char. They’ve won competitions and delivered record catches. Few have tried flashing jigs for perch—but even we were surprised in early tests at how effectively they attracted perch. In strong feeding conditions, a flashing jig is superior, but in slower bites, a jig that’s too large can scare perch away.

A light jig designed for perch

To improve catch reliability, we developed a smaller 85 mm version of the Winter Light. This new size combines the attractiveness of light with a more subtle profile, making it ideal for perch fishing. It is especially recommended for the dark conditions of midwinter, when ice and snow block out light and fish gather curiously around any source of illumination.

Testing shows a longer leader often works better for perch

Light and size alone are not enough. We extensively tested leader lengths and found that a slightly longer leader—around 15 cm—often produces better perch catches. A longer leader makes perch more willing to bite, especially in cautious feeding conditions. Sometimes it’s worth trying even longer leaders, such as 30–40 cm, to tempt more hesitant fish.

Below the light jig, you can use ice flies, mormyshkas, a bare hook, worms, soft plastics, balance jigs—or whatever you prefer. The light attracts the fish; the bait seals the strike.
